The Norman Weerasooria Memorial Shelter, located at No. 73, Apeksha Hospital Road, Maharagama, recently celebrated its 5th anniversary, marking five years of providing crucial support to cancer patients and their families. To commemorate the milestone, senior executives of the International Construction Consortium (ICC) donated high-protein supplements to aid in the well-being and recovery of the patients. However, this initiative is more than just a corporate gesture; it stands out as one that goes far beyond traditional Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
This was inaugurated by ICC on the 02nd September 2019 in memory of it’s late founding Chairman, Norman Weerasooria, to serve low-income patients and their guardians who travel from remote parts of Sri Lanka to seek medical treatment at the Apeksha (Cancer) Hospital. It provides free accommodation and meals with 36 fully equipped private rooms, each featuring a reclining bed, a guardian’s bed, an attached bathroom, and a balcony. Since its establishment, the shelter has supported over 38,400 cancer patients and their guardians, offering free accommodation during their treatment.
Additionally, ICC operates a transportation service for patients who find it difficult to travel home, ensuring they receive comprehensive care both inside and outside the hospital setting. This unique model of care exemplifies ICC’s approach to social responsibility – focusing not only on financial aid but on long-term, meaningful support for those in need.
As the Norman Weerasooria Memorial Shelter reaches this important milestone, ICC reaffirms its commitment to maintaining and expanding the shelter, continuing to serve the patients and families who depend on it.
